The PISA project proved the biological, technical and economic feasibility of marine land-based recirculating aquaculture systems on a production scale. A modern technology concept has been used, which has been already partly studied by the project partners in preliminary examinations. The goal of the PISA project was, next to the technical optimization, the development of algorithms and parameters for the numerical design of commercial sized systems. Furthermore, the project focused on the function of secondary production units to improve the environmental profile by recycling of nutrients and energy. These works have been done in cooperation with the mariculture group at the Leibniz Institute for Marine Sciences (IFM-GEOMAR).
